The Hungarian Prime Minister said that the European Union (EU) is unaware of what is happening and warned of a new, Asian-oriented “world order”. He used the opportunity to once again support the candidacy of Donald Trump for the American presidency, writes the Associated Press.
“Europe has given up on defending its own interests. Everything Europe is doing today is unconditionally following the pro-democratic foreign policy of the United States (U.S.), even at the cost of self-destruction,” Orban said in Baile Tusnad, a majority Hungarian town in central Romania.
“There will be a change that has not been seen for 500 years. What we are facing is actually a change in the world order,” he added, citing China, India, Pakistan and Indonesia as the “dominant centers” of the world.
“Ukraine will return to the position of a buffer state”
He also accused the Americans of being behind the 2022 explosions that damaged the Nord Stream pipelines built to carry gas from Russia to Germany, calling it “an act of terrorism clearly directed by the Americans.” He offered no evidence to support the claim.
At the beginning of this month, Orban went to Moscow and Beijing as part of a so-called “peace mission” with the aim of mediating the end of the Russian war in Ukraine. The mentioned trips caused criticism from most of the European leaders.
When it comes to Ukraine, Orban cast doubt on the possibility of the war-torn country becoming a member of NATO or the EU. “We Europeans don’t have the money for that. Ukraine will return to the position of a buffer state,” he said, adding that international security guarantees “will be incorporated into the agreement between the U.S. and Russia.”
“They want to put Trump in jail”
During the war in Ukraine, Orban opposed sending weapons to Ukrainian forces and regularly delayed, watered down or blocked efforts to send financial aid to Kyiv and impose sanctions on Moscow.
Orban has traditionally used the annual Tusvanyos University festival in Romania to point out the ideological direction of his national government and mock the standards of the EU bloc, which Hungary joined in 2004.
He said that Trump’s re-election bid is aimed at “pulling the American people from a post-nationalist liberal state to a nation state” and repeated a series of claims that Trump was unfairly punished to prevent his return to the White House.
“That’s why they want to put him in prison. That’s why they want to take away his property. And if that doesn’t work, they want to kill,” Orban said, referring to an assassination attempt on Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania this month, N1 writes.
