For months now, people in a state of need, the hungry, the poor, those who literally cannot afford even a crust of bread in the times we live in, can pick up bread for free on the side of the road in the Zalik settlement in Mostar.
Many loaves of bread and other specialties are hanging on the wall of the bakery “Inpek”.
The owner of the bakery has been helping the local community for a long time in various ways, and he came up with this idea in a conversation with the imam of the Zalik congregation, Šefik Effendi Čavčić, and other members of the congregation. There are many loaves of bread carried by many, which is, after all, a sure indication that life is difficult.
“I saw that a lot of people here have a need for it. It was my idea, but also Šefik Effendi Čavčić’s, to do something. That’s how we came up with the idea to make this board. Bread can be taken by anyone, even those who don’t have it. We did it a month or two ago. So far it’s working well. People buy and leave, and we also bake throughout the day. We also leave at the end of working hours. There are plenty of people who don’t have it and are coming to take it over. We are satisfied and happy that we were able to do that little bit for our neighborhood and city. It’s a positive story. The reactions are positive. I hope it will be in greater numbers for Ramadan. That no one will remain loud. We are satisfied,” Gigolaj, the owner of the bakery, told Anadolu news agency.
This is just one in a series of humane gestures of this man. He always responds to calls from the local community. He is looking forward to the month of Mubarek, in which he plans to allocate more of his products to the poor, and this time, as in previous years, he will support the organization of the Iftar in Mostar. Traditional iftar flatbreads are also a specialty of this Ramadan.
“Traditionally for Ramadan, every year I make flatbreads at iftar time. They will be hot. We always respond and donate flatbreads. We make the same ones every year. We are looking for them to be good… People know that. For all iftars, we always responded to the invitations,” Gigolaj added.
This place is not the only one where hungry Mostars have the opportunity to get a free meal without anyone knowing about it. For a long time there has been a small refrigerator in the Luka settlement where activists of the “Together for our City” organization leave sandwiches, juices and other meals for people in a state of need.
