Serbian President Aleksadar Vučić said that Serbia “intends to maintain an independent policy and its position of not imposing sanctions on the Russian Federation”.
Vučić pointed out that Serbia will try to preserve that position, despite great pressure from the West.
“…but my answer will be – we will continue to try to defend our position as long as possible. We managed to do that for two years. I don’t know if we will continue to do that, but I hope so,” sad Vučić for TASS Agency.
He recalled that at the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, he said that Serbia’s position was to condemn the conflict, but that Serbia does not impose sanctions on Russia because it knows from experience what it feels like to be under sanctions, and that it would be unfair to treat friendly, Russian to the people.
“But I told the Serbs that I couldn’t guarantee that, because I didn’t know what the pressure would be like in the future. I didn’t want to play the hero for one, two or three days, and then change my decision,” said Vučić.
