On Sunday, in front of the National Museum in Sarajevo, was held a peaceful demonstration of activists for animal welfare, in protest against the amendments to the Animal Protection and Welfare Act.
In fact, in 2008 was adopted the ban on breeding animals for fur with a transitional period of 10 years.
“To prevent a final ban on a fur lobby, led by the member of HDZ Mario Karamatic, were proposed amendments to the Animal Protection and Welfare Act with which this ban would be lifted,” explained activists from the Association of Vegans of BiH.
“While all European countries are moving towards progress, new ways of environment protection, fighting for rights of workers- BiH returns to the stone age because of pure lack of knowledge among the citizens of BiH on the harmful effects of fur farming. Croatia and Serbia will soon cross the transitional period and close all fur farms, which cannot legally exist under current laws and regulations, at the same time not violating the ethical and environmental prescribed minimums,” as said in the statement of protest organizers.
Number of fur farms is unknown due to the negligence of BiH institutions and inaction of veterinary inspection, which allows the survival of many illegal farms.
Although the draft amendments to the law were adopted on first reading at the session of the House of Peoples held on the 27th of May, activists say that they will continue to fight against lifting the ban on fur farms.
“This is a very dangerous decision of the House of Peoples, which is not only harmful to the millions of innocent animals, but also for farm workers and the population in places where they are opened,” as said in the statement.
