On this day in the war year 1992, as a result of an attack on the “Dr. Zehra Muidović” maternity hospital in Sarajevo, five babies died. As a sign of lasting memory of tragically lost innocent lives, the Association of Parents of Murdered Children of the Siege of Sarajevo 1992-1995. organized the laying of flowers next to the memorial plaque at that place today.

President of the Association of Parents of Murdered Children of Besieged Sarajevo 1992-1995 Fikret Grabovica emphasized the importance of nurturing the culture of memory and preserving the truth about the suffering of the citizens of Sarajevo during the siege.

“It is extremely important to remember and to preserve the truth from being forgotten, to pass it on to young future generations. Regardless of the fact that the aggression ended thirty years ago, the narrative is still being created that it was not aggression, that it was a civil war. There was a siege here for 1,425 days, there was a hell here, and we know that best who lived in this city during that period. An infantry attack was attempted on the maternity hospital facility, when they failed, then they shelled maternity hospital and then five babies unfortunately died due to lack of electricity,” said Grabovica.

On behalf of the Municipality of Centar, flowers were laid by Assistant Chief for Veterans-Disabled and Social Protection Amra Hašimbegović Vučković and Hašimbegović, Head of Department for Veterans-Disabled Protection Muamer Uglješ.

It was one of the most terrible events in the first months of the military siege that will cut off the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina from the world for the next four years.

A fierce infantry attack on the maternity hospital began in the morning of May 26, 1992, and in the afternoon a terrible shelling followed.

The city maternity hospital “Dr. Zehra Muidović” was built in 1977 with self-contribution funds from the citizens of Sarajevo, and was destroyed in the period 1992-1995. It was renovated with the funds of the Republic of Turkey, Sarajevo Canton and the KS Health Insurance Institute, announced the Municipality of Centar Sarajevo.
