lukomir_na_hrane_kanonu_rakitnice_v_zime-696x456It was snowing yesterday in the only inhabited place in Bosnia and Herezgovina situated above 1.300 meters above sea level and the residents are preparing for their winter migration.

“Last night there was a true snowstorm and strong wind, there was no snow this morning, and the height of snow is around ten centimeters because the wind dispersed it. We are still in the village, 20 houses are still inhabited, and we are ready to leave in case of major snowfall. We hope that we will not have to leave the village for several more days,” said Mujo Maslaša who lives in Lukomir. His catering facility “Summer garden” is the favorite destination of alpinists, tourists and nature lovers.

A lot of work has to be done prior to the departure from the village for several months.

“Cattle and dairy products must be transported, windows and doors must be protected against weather with wooden boards, installations must be protected from frost,” Masleša said.

No one has come to Lukomir since yesterday, so the residents do not know if the road is clear.

Last year the residents of Lukomir left their houses in late November and together with their cattle they spent the winter in Tarčin, Hadžići and Vlakovo.

The upcoming winter will be sixth consecutive winter when Lukomir, located at 1.495 meters above sea level, will be locked down until April or May next year.

All 20 houses will be empty until spring and only sometimes, depending on the height of snow, the residents will come to the village by foot to check their houses.

Until the beginning of winter, there are more than 3.000 sheep and a dozen cows in barns of 15 households in Lukomir.

Lukomir, the last authentic Bosnian village with houses of stone and roofs of shingles, is around 50 kilometers away from Sarajevo and 35 kilometers away from Konjic. It is situated on the cliff of the canyon of Rakitnica. Lukomir is the favorite destination of climbers, cyclists, motorcyclists, and increasingly more foreign tourists who come to Lukomir to enjoy the view of the Rakitnica Canyon and the horizon that extends all the way to the “Mostar gate” and the peaks of Prenj, Visočica, Obalj. Visitors also enjoy the specialties of traditional cuisine of the villages of Bjelašnica.
