Rural Tourism can preserve Traditions and Customs, but also provide Jobs

In the last few years, rural tourism in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) has become an attraction among foreign as well as domestic tourists. More and more people are finding an escape from the city lifestyle in the nature and rural areas. The most important characteristics of agrotourism include a peaceful and relaxing environment, local traditional food, as well as the rural lifestyle itself.

The mountain village of Lukomir is an extremely interesting tourist destination. But due to the 1.460 meters above sea level and extremely low temperatures, it is only available for visitors for three summer months of the year. The potential of rural tourism was seen by Mirsad Mustajbegovic, who helps his son develop a small family business located at the very entrance to the village of Lukomir.

”One mountaineer brings groups of foreigners and they are people of all ages. There are also those who organize cycling visits. Lukomir is often visited by foreigners, people who love nature,” Mirsad says.

”The prices are reasonable for our conditions, acceptable to our people. For us, our people are the basis for measurement, not foreigners,” Mirsad points out.

Agritourism throughout BiH has become a way of preserving the traditions and customs of all parts of our country, as well as an integral part of the occupation of an increasing number of local residents of various professions, which should be an incentive for the government to provide support in the future transformation of this type of tourism.

”We are working on the transformation of tourism because it is very important for people to see interest, to invest in tourism and the tourism sector,” said Edita Djapo (SBB), Minister of Environment and Tourism of the Federation of BiH (FBiH).

Many tourists, as well as domestic visitors, are pleasantly surprised by the beauty of BiH. Mountain terrains are ideal for all those who like to hike, and along the way see domestic animals that move freely through beautiful landscapes.

”We were there (Lukomir) for the first time two years ago and we were really blown away by the authenticity of the place,” a tourist from Serbia, Jelena Novakovic, points out.
