Sarajevo as a City that preserves the Spirit of Multiculturalism

Many say that Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) is the embodiment of multiculturalism, coexistence of multiple cultures with mutual respect and appreciation.

The term “multi” as the first part of the word refers to something that consists of more than one thing, so multiculturalism also means the richness of a society, but not in the way that one’s culture is trying to be impoverished. It is a public policy that promotes interest and knowledge about different cultures through education and the media.

Sarajevo, the capital of BiH, has always been a multicultural city, and the serious tragedy and siege that hit it did not leave anyone indifferent.

The past war in BiH is today the generally accepted name for the international armed conflict that was fought from 1991 to 1995, and is considered part of one of the conflicts of the breakup of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

Also, many call Sarajevo the city that unites East and West – as sides of the world, but also as cultures, whereby the eastern is considered Ottoman-Islamic, and the western Austro-Hungarian-Christian culture.

A picture is worth a thousand words – and that it is really so in the combination of tradition and culture in one city.

Beautiful rich scenes of the capital city, churches, mosques, cathedrals, synagogues – are indicators that Sarajevo preserves its spirit of multiculturalism.

This year, the month of April is also special, in which many citizens celebrated Pesach, Easter, Orthodox Easter, and yesterday, Eid al-Fitr.
