Sarajevo Hosts Conference Dedicated To Missing Babies From The Territory Of The Former Yugoslavia

An international conference entitled “Quo vadis humanitas – The Truth about Missing Babies and the Obligation to Protect Every Child” will be held in Sarajevo tomorrow. The gathering is dedicated to one of the most difficult and sensitive humanitarian issues in the territory of the former Yugoslavia, the unresolved disappearances of newborns for whom, decades later, parents are still searching.

The conference is organized by the Association of Parents of Missing Babies of Vojvodina and the Association of the Christian Union of Croatia, and will bring together parents, experts, doctors, lawyers, activists, and journalists who have for years been dealing with the issue of missing babies and suspicious deaths of newborns in maternity hospitals.

According to unofficial estimates, as many as 250.000 children in the former Yugoslavia were declared dead under unexplained circumstances, while parents believe that their babies were abducted and given up for illegal adoptions, often abroad. This problem, as the organizers emphasize, has persisted from 1945 to the present day, and families continue to seek the truth, justice, and accountability of institutions.

On this occasion, Ana Pejic from the Association of Parents of Missing Babies of Vojvodina and Henrijeta Tankovic, the mother of a missing baby, spoke for the interview.
