Sarajevo Roses painted in Memory of the beginning of the Siege of Sarajevo

rosesActivists of the Youth Initiative for Human Rights (YIHR B&H) marked 2nd of May with symbolic painting of roses on the stretch from the Cathedral to the City Hall.

Youth Initiative for Human Rights B&H wanted to break away the authentic monuments of the Sarajevo siege from oblivion with this campaign.

Besides painting roses, with banners saying: “This is Serbia” and “This is a post office, you fool,” activists wanted to drew attention to the fact that on the 2nd of May 1992, the main post office in the city was set on fire.

This way, activists marked the day when the siege of Sarajevo began. This was the longest siege of a city in modern history of civilization.

To recall, Sarajevo Roses are visible traces of mortar shells fired at the city during the four-year siege of the city from 1992 to 1995 and represent a monuments of suffer during the war in the capital of B&H.
