Sarajevo is one of ten cities in the world that are simultaneously celebrating five years of Julian Assage’s residence in a political asylum in Ecuador.
The aim of this gathering is to provide support for truthful speech and freedom of speech.
This event was supported by many intellectuals such as Patti Smith, Brian Eno, PJ Harvey, Laibach, Noam Chomsky, Yanis Varoufakis, Ai Weiwei, Vivienne Westwood, Michael Moore, Ken Loach, Slavoj Žižek, Edgar Morin, Bernard Stiegler, Franco “Bifo” Berardi, Baltasar Garzon, Amy Goodman, Ignacio Ramonet, Chris Hedges, Evgeny Morozo etc.
In Sarajevo, the audience began to gather around 08:30 PM. This event was mainly supported by a younger audience.
Filandra Zulfikar, theatre director and organizer of this event, said that all present have the same aim, and that is justice for Assage. They emphasized that it is very important that Assage leaves the embassy safely in order to prevent his extradition to the Great Britain, a country which wants to convict him for spying.
Julian Assage addressed the audience via live-stream at 21:30, followed by the talks from Yanis Varoufakis, Srećko Horvat, Slavoje Žižek, Brian Enoa, Vivienne Westwood.
Assage has already been detained without charge for 2022 days. Four months ago, the UN adjudicated that Great Britain and Sweden have been illegally keeping him in custody since the 7th of December 2010. The UN has ordered his immediate release and compensation. Both countries have refused to fulfil this order.
