Serbia has received a new weapon from Moscow, despite sanctions imposed on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic presented the new anti-drone system available to the Serbian army to the public. The Repellent system is used for the electronic jamming of drones.
“This is Repellent. It’s not as powerful as Krasukha, but it’s excellent,” Vucic said on Wednesday, the day before Statehood Day, known as Sretenje.
The new weapon arrived in Serbia a few months ago, although the airspace around Serbia is almost entirely controlled by NATO members who have agreed to Western sanctions against Russia. Serbia is the only European country that has refused to participate in European sanctions against Moscow and is the only one with official cooperation agreements with Moscow.
Due to taking the Russian side in the conflict with Ukraine, Serbia has received warnings from Brussels and threats that it will not become a member of the European Union (EU) if it continues to do so. Recently, it has been rapidly arming itself, with most weapons purchased from Russia. Some materials come from China and some from European manufacturers.
At the same time, Vucic often threatens Kosovo, whose sovereignty Belgrade does not recognize.
In his speeches, the Serbian president points out that in the event of a NATO attack on Serbia, like the one in 1999, Serbia would be in a different position. “They would have to strike from a distance, from the Mediterranean or the Adriatic, with cruise missiles,” Vucic said, N1 reports.
