Customs officials at the Gradina border crossing, between Serbia and Bulgaria, prevented an attempt to smuggle 130,000 euros and 5,500 dollars hidden in a package of baby diapers, the Customs Administration announced.
As stated, the foreign exchange violation was discovered in a Kia vehicle with foreign license plates used by a family of three traveling from Austria to Bulgaria.
A married couple traveling with a two-year-old child confirmed to the officials that they had nothing to report, but during a detailed check of the luggage, it was discovered that a bag with 130,000 euros, as well as an envelope with 5,500 dollars, was found in the bag with children’s belongings among the diapers.
Since the money was not declared at the entrance to the country, 10,000 euros per person were immediately returned to the passengers, and the rest of the money was kept until the end of the misdemeanor proceedings.
The Customs Administration once again reminded that all passengers, including those who are just passing through Serbia, are required to declare any amount greater than 10,000 euros at the entrance.
