Significant Decrease in Tourists’ Visits and Overnight Stays in Bosnia and Herzegovina

In February 2020, 71,771 tourists visited Bosnia and Herzegovina, which was by 8.3% less than in January 2020 and 3.0% less than in February 2019, according to Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Agency for Statistics.

Tourists realized 170,055 overnight stays, which is 8.6% less than in January 2020 and 3.2% less than in February 2020.  The share of domestic tourists in the total number of overnight stays is 34.1%, while the share of foreign tourists is 65.9%. The number of overnight stays of domestic tourists decreased by 2.7% compared to January 2020 and increased by 4.2% compared to February 2019.

The number of overnight stays of foreign tourists decreased by 11.4% compared to January 2020 and by 6.6% compared to February 2019. In the structure of overnight stays of foreign tourists in February 2020, the most nights were realized by tourists from Croatia (30.0%), Serbia (24.0%), Slovenia (7.2%), Turkey (3.3%), Germany (3, 2%) and Montenegro (2.3%) which is 70.0% in total.

Tourists from other countries realized 30.0% of the nights. Regarding the length of stay of foreign tourists in our country, in the first place are: Iran with an average stay of 10.8 nights, South Africa 7.3 nights, Cyprus 4.6 nights, Lithuania with 4.0 nights and Island with 3.7 night.

There were 18,960 tourists, apartments and campsites available to tourists in February 2020 in Bosnia and Herzegovina, up 1.2% from February 2019 and 39,792 available beds, down 5.2% from the same month last year. In February 2020, 16,753 rooms and suites were available to tourists in hotels and similar accommodation, which is 0.4% less than in February 2019 and 34,414 beds which is 6.1% less than in the same month of the previous year.

In February 2020, the net occupancy rate for permanent beds was 15.5%.

According to the type of accommodation facility, the highest number of overnight stays was recorded in Hotels and similar accommodation with a participation of 90.1%.
