Slovenian President Pahor: Prevent Russian Influence by Receiving BiH in NATO

Borut PahorBorut Pahor, president of Slovenia, said on Thursday that NATO should accelerate receipt of countries in the Balkans, especially BiH, in order to prevent the spread of Russian influence in the region.

“In the Western Balkans, the European Union’s mistake with Ukraine should not be repeated, when it conditioned signature of its agreement on accession. BiH, Montenegro, and Macedonia are candidates for NATO – I call on our allies to realize the importance of expansion at least to BiH, as a bumper against the spread of Russian influence and a guarantee of its state integrity,” Pahor said Thursday in an interview with Slovenian television.

In the interview, Pahor mainly responded to questions on domestic politics, saying that the government of Miro Cerar has a good direction, although it should speed up the pace of reforms.

As concerns privatization of the state sector, Pahor said that it seems to him that it would be more important for the government to set a list of companies that it will not sell, instead of creating a list of firms that will be sold in privatization.
