Social Centers in BiH provide Shelter to the Homeless People

homelessSocial centers offer a warm home for people in need and homeless people, due to extremely low temperatures that affected BiH in recent days. These institutions enable them to spend these cold January days, during which the temperature goes below – 20 °C, in a warm place with a hot meal.

The capacity of the Gerontology Center of Banja Luka is ten beds. Persons who are accommodated in this institution have health care, food and beverages, laundry services, kitchen and social work at their disposal.

Homeless people in Canton Sarajevo are staying at the Gerontology Center of Sarajevo during these extreme weather conditions, and sociologist Ensar Ticic told us that they have increased number of homeless people in the last two or three months.

“In the center is situated a total of 19 users, and the shelter offers 25 places. People come to the center in two ways – at the request of the competent social welfare services in Canton Sarajevo or accompanied by officers of the police stations in the CS and accompanied by a duty social worker with the official record. Homeless people cannot come here on their own initiative because we cannot accept them in this case. We have defined a clear category of homeless people and they are people who currently find themselves in social need,” explained Ticic and added that several persons are here for health reasons.

On the territory of Brcko District operates winter shelter for homeless people, and the Department of Public Safety in Brcko District and the local Red Cross partially adapted space in one of the buildings in the city’s duty-free zone for homeless people during the winter period.

Space is adapted for the stay of homeless people in the cold winter days, and there is around 10 beds. In the shelter, besides beds, is also secured a hot meal and drink.

Within the PI Centre for Social Work Zenica was established the Home for the homeless people at the association “Pomirenje”.

“Homeless people can be here from 8 pm to 8 am. They can stay here and get breakfast and dinner, but due to extremely low temperatures, they usually stay here during the day as well. They can stay in the home for seven days with the possibility of extension. Here are located four people at the moment, and the capacity is ten beds.
