Special Screenings 2026: Films about Identity, Closeness, and Hope

The Special Screenings programme of the 32nd Sarajevo Film Festival features six films exploring the quest for identity, connection, and hope through the power of art, music, and family bonds in times of crisis. Through fiction and documentary, these works celebrate human connection and the enduring strength of the spirit.

Films in programme:

ANTIGONE, THE DOCUTRAGEDY, Goran Gajić

(United States, 2026, 75 min.) – World Premiere

Cast: Mira Furlan, Wayne Duvall, Jillian Crane, James Parks, Ann Howard, Daniel Hutchinson

ANTIGONE, THE DOCUTRAGEDY uses the restored recording of a small independent 1995 Los Angeles production of “Antigone,” starring Mira Furlan, as the foundation for an original cinematic journey. As three decades separate the performance from the present, the production reveals itself to be even more relevant and prophetic than when it was first staged.

BROTHER VERSES BROTHER, Ari Gold

(United States, 2025, 92 min.)

Cast: Ari Gold, Ethan Gold, Lara Louise, Brian Bell, Herbert Gold, Tongo Eisen-Martin

Co-dependent twin musicians Ari and Ethan Gold have one night to find three things: love, a song, and their father – a ninety-nine-year-old Beat Generation poet, the last of his kind. Their search plays out in ninety minutes of “live cinema,” according to the precepts of executive producer Francis Ford Coppola, delivering a single unbroken journey through San Francisco’s North Beach, towards one final performance, captured just weeks before their father’s death.

GUGGI, Ian Thuillier

(Ireland, 2026, 77 min.)

From the streets of Dublin to the walls of major galleries, GUGGI follows the life and work of Irish artist Guggi, exploring the friendships, struggles, and inner forces that shaped one of Ireland’s most distinctive creative voices.

LACHTARA-LONGING / LACHTARA-TĘSKNOTA, Sebastian Chondrokostas

(Poland, Greece, 2026, 127 min.)

Cast: Filip Pławiak, Branko Đurić, Sarina Farhadi

In 2015, Europe is in the midst of the financial and migration crisis. Piotr, a Polish stockbroker, finds his father, Jorgos — an eccentric Greek musician – after a twenty-eight-year absence. Together, father and son set off in an old car, heading from Greece to Poland to settle a family inheritance.

STAND TOGETHER AS ONE: THE FAMINE, THE MUSIC, THE IMPACT, Chip Duncan

(United States, Kenya, 2025, 59 min.)

Forty years after the recording of “We Are the World” the pop anthem still resonates for music lovers worldwide… and the global concert Live Aid remains the benchmark for what’s possible when musicians come together in a common cause.

TUTTI FRUTTI, Céline Sciamma

(France, 2026, 40 min.)

Since 2022, Céline Sciamma has been shooting her own footage: documentary archives born from the desire of a useful camera. Fiction, for its part, has once again become a dream. TUTTI FRUTTI is a journey through all these fragments brought together by editing, and an exploration of the hope of a solo filmmaking practice. The film was made as part of the OÙ EN ÊTES-VOUS collection for the Centre Pompidou.
