Commenting on the 19th Anniversary of the Srebrenica massacre, Angelina Jolie said:
“My heart goes out to the 175 families who yesterday laid their loved ones to rest in Srebrenica. Their dignity and strength are truly humbling to behold.
My thoughts and compassion are also with the many other Bosnians whose fathers, husbands, brothers, uncles and sons were brutally killed in the genocide 19 years ago, but whose bodies have not yet been found.
These courageous survivors of Srebrenica live with immeasurable pain and a deep sense of insecurity. Most have had never seen any justice. To add to their grief, some voices are trying to deny the facts of history.
But the genocide in Srebrenica can never be erased, and should weigh heavy on all our consciences.
The world failed to prevent the murder of more than 8,000 innocent men and boys in 1995.
We owe it their memory, and to the survivors they left behind, to stand up for the truth, and to help Bosnia-Herzegovina achieve lasting stability and a future free of fear”.
