[wzslider autoplay=”true”]Careva mosque is one of the first mosques built in BiH and the first one in Sarajevo.
It was built back in 1462, and her construction and funds were enabled by the founder of Sarajevo, Isa Bey Ishakovic.
However, this mosque was burned down back in 1480, when despot Vuk Grgurevic broke into with army from Jajce and burnt Sarajevo. Mosques was built again in the same place again (according to the opinion of some people from the foundations, and according to others only dome of the mosque was burned down).
It was built in its present form back in 1566, and its construction was funded by Suleiman the Magnificent. At that time, the main architect of the Ottoman Empire was Mimar Sinan and it is believed that the construction of this mosque was realized by one of his students or associates.
Two side ports of the mosque were walled up and turned into auxiliary facilities back in 1847. During the conservation work at the end of the last century (1980 or 1990) four layers of wall decorations, from the XVI, XVIII and beginning XIX century, were discovered and partially restored. Octagonal minaret, whose serefe is covered with stalactites, is one of the most beautiful old minarets in BiH.
For couple of archaic tombstones behind the mihrab is believed to indicate the tomb of the founder of Sarajevo, Isa Bey Ishakovic.
In 1912, architect Karlo Parzik, while respecting the module and using elements that have been seen in the construction of Bosnian houses, designed the building of Ulema majlis and successfully composed it in whole of the Careva Mosque.
Isa-bey hamam, also known as the Carev (Emperor’s) hamam, is the oldest public bath in Sarajevo, and it was built by the third bey of the Ottoman province of Bosnia and the main founder of Sarajevo and Novi Pazar, Isa Bey Ishakovic. It was built in the immediate vicinity of Careva mosque. Hamam was mentioned for the first time back in 1462. Over time, the building of hamam was damaged, and it was fully demolished in 1889. Hamam was rebuilt in 1891, according to design of architect Josip Vancas. One part of the building was designed on the basis of old hamam, while the other part is the modern bath of western type.
