Students from BiH Take Part in Second Tokunoshima International Youth Camp in Japan

Professor Yukie Tatta, a key organizer of the Tokunoshima International Youth Camp and a visiting researcher at the University of Sarajevo, recently visited Sarajevo to discuss with local stakeholders how to further expand exchange programs and foster mutual understanding between Japan and Bosnia and Herzegovina. She is affiliated with the Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology at the University of Tokyo.

The Tokunoshima International Youth Camp, held from December 2-8, 2024, on Tokunoshima Island in southwestern Japan, welcomed students from Bosnia and Herzegovina, South Korea, and Japan. Organized by the University of Tokyo’s Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology Open Laboratory for Emergence Strategies (ROLES), the program was funded by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and supported by the Embassy of Japan in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

A total of twelve students participated, including six from BiH—two each from the University of Sarajevo, the University of Banja Luka, and the University of Mostar—who formed “Team BiH” under the leadership of Professor Dino Abrazović from the University of Sarajevo.

The camp aimed to provide students with a deeper understanding of post-war societies by encouraging them to reflect on the experiences of those born after conflicts. Through this, participants gained new perspectives on war’s lasting effects and the importance of peacebuilding.

Beyond academic discussions, the program fostered strong bonds among participants. Students built friendships across nationalities and engaged with local children, considering how to shape a shared future with younger generations. The BiH participants continue to stay in touch and occasionally visit one another.

The impact of the camp is evident in the reflections of its participants:

“This journey has changed me in a positive way. It taught me to be more open, patient, and grateful for the small things in life. Japan has left a deep mark on my heart, and I hope to return one day to experience its magic again.” – Anastasija, University of Banja Luka

“I had the opportunity to experience and meet different cultures and learn a lot about others and myself, further solidifying my views on the importance of peace and its preservation, building, and nurturing.” – Ajnur, University of Sarajevo
