Raspberry Picker faktor.baStudents of the Faculty of Agriculture in Sarajevo Haris Kanlic and Bilal Causevic from Gorazde practically apply the knowledge they gained at university in their own production. They are an example that there are young people in BiH who do not just sit and wait for the job.

“Our country has a huge potential for agricultural production and that was one of the motivations for us to start our own business. We are not one of those people who just sit and wait for their parents to give them pocket money, but we decided to start something ours,” says Haris Kanlic.

Two years ago, Haris planted raspberries on the family farm. The business started well and he decided to expand the production while studying, which was very demanding, but he is enjoying the results of his work now.

After the harvest on the family farm, they are selling part of raspberries fresh, while they process rest and produce a variety of jams, juices, compotes and syrups that are very popular in the market. Except for raspberries, Kanlic’s are processing other fruits, they are making jams from sweet plum and quince and apple and cherry. Part of their product is for personal use, while they sell another part at fairs, and buyers often come to the farm by themselves.

“We produce a lot, around hundred kilograms of jam, compote and about 200 liters of various juices and syrups,” says this hardworking young man.

Due to their studies in Sarajevo, they are visiting plantations on weekends, and they carried out all activities and analysis of the quality of land in order for cultivation to be as successful as possible. They performed the analysis at the university with the help of their professors. The first year’s crop showed that they did everything right. This year, if weather conditions are good, they expect even better yield.

“We are very satisfied, we had a great yield for the first year of the production. We got almost a ton, the maximum yield, we returned invested money, and earned some money as well,” says Bilal Causevic.

Haris is proud because they already exhibited at some fairs.

Haris and Bilal are dreaming about successful future and career. They do not want to be part of the statistics of unemployed persons, but an example to young people that the effort and gained knowledge can pay off. They believe that BiH, like the EU, will establish a serious system of purchase of agricultural products and provide the necessary security for farmers.
