Students of the Faculty of Economics and the Study of Tourism of the University ”Dzemal Bijedic” in Mostar, accompanied by the subject teacher Professor Veldin Ovcina, visited the premises and the control tower of the Bosnia and Herzegovina Air Navigation Services Agency (BHANSA) in Mostar in order to be informed about to the work of the Agency and the position of air traffic controllers.

BHANSA was founded in 2009 as a non-profit and financially independent institution with the status of a legal entity, which as of December 2019 has fully taken over control of air traffic in the entire airspace of BiH.

Due to the continuous growth in the volume of air traffic, the demand for air traffic controllers is increasing nowadays, stated the University of Mostar ”Dzemal Bijedic”.

The hosts informed the students about the specifics, challenges, and demands of the job of an air traffic controller, a position which, as they pointed out, requires a high level of knowledge, resourcefulness, determination, and the ability to manage in crisis situations, i.e. performing work under pressure.

Since pilots need continuous support from air traffic control in order to fly safely, the position of air traffic controller becomes crucial for the efficient functioning of the airport and the aviation industry as a whole.

Students had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the work of all the services that provide support to air traffic controllers, in order to fully optimize the entire process.

”We had the opportunity to see how air traffic controllers, using radar and other modern technologies for tracking planes, maintain contact with pilots – issue instructions, give advice and information so that air traffic can proceed quickly, efficiently, and safely. We learned that in addition to the air traffic controllers located in the airport towers, there are also regional and access air traffic controllers, and we were briefly informed about their tasks and business missions. We would like to thank the BHANSA management who provided us with this opportunity, and we owe special thanks to Mr. Sanjin Galic, Head of the Air Traffic Control Department, for the excellent reception and excellent presentation,” professor Ovcina stated.
