Support for Germany’s far-right AfD has weakened slightly

Support for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) fell to its lowest level since June 2023, the dpa agency wrote on Tuesday, adding that the party won 17 percent of the vote in the latest polls.

The AfD lost one percentage point compared to last week, according to a poll published by RTL and ntv. As reported by ntv, the AfD achieved the worst result in a poll since June last year.

Germany has seen a wave of protests against far-right extremism and racism in recent weeks. Hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets in numerous cities, also protesting against the AfD.

The protests were sparked by a media report that revealed a secret meeting of far-right extremists in which several AfD officials participated. At the meeting, the participants discussed plans for the mass deportation of migrants.

The conservative opposition CDU/CSU bloc won 30 percent, and the new populist Sahra Wagenknecht party four percent of the vote.

The Liberals (FDP), the junior partner in Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s center-right government coalition, improved by one percentage point, reaching the 5 percent threshold to enter parliament for the first time in a year, according to ntv.

Scholz’s Social Democrats (SPD) won 15 percent, and coalition partner the Greens 14 percent. These results are the same as last week, Hina reports.
