Two men have been arrested in Germany on suspicion of planning a knife attack on worshipers at a synagogue in Heidelberg, in the southwest of the country.

The suspects, aged 24 and 18, were detained during separate police operations in the state of Baden-Württemberg earlier this month, state prosecutors and police said.

They discussed the killing of one or more worshipers in an attack on a synagogue, followed by their “martyr’s death”, in which they wanted the police to kill them, according to a joint statement by the German authorities.

The suspects, who have German citizenship, and one Turkish citizen, face charges of conspiracy to commit murder.

Police discovered the plot by searching the home of the elderly suspect on May 3.

During the search, the officer shot and wounded the suspect after he retrieved the knife.

As reported, during the search it was discovered that the two suspects exchanged online messages in April about a possible attack on the synagogue.

On May 18, the police detained the younger suspect and searched his apartment.

The names of those arrested have not been released, Hina reports.
