Sweden Open to Sending Troops to Ukraine for Post-War Peacekeeping Mission

Sweden is not ruling out the possibility of sending its troops to Ukraine as part of a peacekeeping force after the war ends, Swedish state radio reported, citing Foreign Minister Marie Malmer Stenergard.

The Swedish foreign minister made the statement after British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced Britain’s readiness to send troops to Ukraine to keep the peace.

Starmer’s move comes in an attempt to show the United States that European countries must play an active role in talks to end the war, Reuters reports.

“First, we must negotiate a just and sustainable peace that respects international law and Ukraine’s sovereignty, and above all, ensure that Russia does not withdraw, re-strengthen and attack Ukraine or another country in a few years,” Stenergard said.

She added that once such a peace is achieved, its long-term stability must be ensured.

“In that case, our government does not rule out any options,” the Swedish foreign minister said.

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in Saudi Arabia today, where he will hold announced talks with Russian officials on ending Russia’s nearly three-year-long invasion of Ukraine.
