Tens of thousands of citizens gathered today to block three Novi Sad bridges to mark three months since the death of 15 people in the collapse of a canopy in front of the city’s railway station.
Students and citizens gathered at the blockades of key locations in Novi Sad, the Varadinski, Žeželjev and Slobode Bridges, in a symbolic way, as they stated, to express their dissatisfaction that even three months after the tragedy, no one has been held accountable.
The Žeželjev and Varadinski bridges will be blocked today from 3 to 6 p.m., and the Slobode Bridge for 24 hours, until 3 p.m. tomorrow.
Today’s rally was preceded by the arrival of a large number of students who walked from Belgrade to Novi Sad, where they will pay tribute to the victims with their colleagues and citizens.
A large number of citizens came to the capital of Vojvodina on bicycles with the students from Belgrade.
They were welcomed last night by thousands of their colleagues and Novi Sad residents, and the faculties provided them with improvised accommodation, food and logistical support.
On the eve of the student blockade of all three bridges in Novi Sad, at least 10,000 motorcyclists from other cities joined the students.
The arrival and reception of the demonstrators in Novi Sad was not accompanied by any serious incidents, and the processions and rally were secured by the police.
The Žeželjev and Varadin bridges will be blocked today from 3 to 6 p.m., and the Freedom Bridge 24 hours a day, until 3 p.m. tomorrow.
Students in Serbia also received support from their colleagues in Croatia
Students in Serbia, who have been protesting for more than two months after the collapse of a canopy in Novi Sad, which killed 15 people, have been joined, in protest silence, by students from three Croatian cities.
Namely, students in Zagreb, Split and Osijek expressed their solidarity and support for their colleagues in Serbia with a fifteen-minute protest silence and the message that “solidarity knows no borders”.
