Newborn Sarajevans in the maternity hospital became the victims of the aggressors on yesterday’s day in 1992, and the participants of the defense claim that this defense was crucial for the defense of the city.
After laying flowers, the Chairman of the Municipal Council of Centar Sarajevo, Sejad Djozo, stated that this date should be marked every year, and thus remember all those who gave their lives for the state, including our then newborn fellow citizens.
”Thirty years ago, this building was defended, but unfortunately,five innocent babies did not survive. Watching the scenes of the shelling of the maternity hospital, unfortunately, we could sense that this will be the bloodiest war since the Second World War, ” emphasized Jozo on that occasion.
The organizer of the resistance from the Centar municipality and the war commander of the “Kosevsko brdo” detachment, Sead Alic, said that a hard fight was fought on May 26th, 1992, because on that day, all premeditated actions with one monstrous goal – the destruction of Sarajevo and its inhabitants, were carried out.
Yesterday‘s commemoration of the anniversary was attended by councilors Velija Katica, Hidajet Poric, and Dzenan Mulic.
The city maternity hospital “Dr. Zehra Mujdovic” was built with the funds of the self-contribution of the citizens of Sarajevo in 1977 and was destroyed in the period 1992-1995. It was renovated with the funds of the Republic of Turkey, Canton Sarajevo (CS), and the CS Health Insurance Institute, the Municipality of Centar Sarajevo announced.
