The Anniversary of the Demolition of the Old Bridge was marked by a Jump without Applause

With throwing flowers into the Neretva and jumping without applause, the 28th anniversary of the destruction of the Old Bridge was marked.

The “Mostari” diving club, as it was the case in previous years, marked the anniversary of the demolition of the Old Bridge with a symbolic jump without applause at exactly 10.16 a.m., when the recognizable arch of the Old Bridge collapsed into the Neretva in 1993.

On behalf of the Coordination Team for the organization of the celebration of the 28th anniversary of the demolition of the Old Bridge, Seada Kustric noted that this year primary schools from Stolac to Prozor were included in the marking of thisanniversary.

Also, she pointed out that the anniversary of this event and its marking must not be forgotten.

“This must be a warning, but we also need to find the strength for a brighter future for the younger generations,” Kustric told.

The president of the “Mostar” diving club, Lorens Listo, stressed that the marking of this anniversary means a lot to him.

“A lot of children came and that’s important, they should be here, but in my opinion, there are somehow too many flags and everything, it turns out to be a celebration, and not marking of the sad anniversary of the demolition of the Old Bridge,” Listo explained.

Legendary diver from Mostar Emir Balić said that he was absent from the city when the Old Bridge was demolished and that he was shocked by the information about its destruction.

”One journalist informed me that the Old Bridge was demolished. I was shocked. I could not believe it even when I saw it on the news. The bridge that stood firm for more than 400 years and endured all wars, earthquakes and natural disasters was eventually destroyed by men. That was shocking. This bridge is the symbol of the city. It was everything to us, back at hte time. That is why it is important to mark the anniversary of its destruction and its reconstruction,“ said Balić, adding that the Old Bridge is for BiH and Mostar the same thing as the Eiffel Tower is for Paris and France.

On this day 27 years ago, the forces of the Croatian Defense Council (HVO), after two days of shelling, demolished the Old Bridge in Mostar.

With it, the entire old core of the Old Town was destroyed, including several monumental mosques, madrasas and the only hamam in Herzegovina. The demolition of the Old Bridge began twenty days earlier, and intensively on November 8, 1993.

It was hit from the nearby mountain heights of Planinica and Stotina with grenades of great destructive power. Grenades also fell on the Tara and Halebinka towers, which are a kind of static weight on the bridge. An entire street with shops called Kujundziluk has completely disappeared.

For two days in a row, the grenades intensively destroyed part of the bridge. On November 9, at 10:16 a.m., the bridge fell into the Neretva river.

The International Criminal Court in The Hague, in a verdict from 2017, which sentenced the “Hague Six” led by Jadranko Prlic to 111 years in prison for war crimes against Bosniaks, concluded that the Old Bridge was a legitimate military target.

Old Bridge is the work of the Turkish architect Hayrudin, who made the bridge upon the order by Suleiman the Magnificent. The bridge was being built in the period from 1557 until 1566. Although there is not much official information about its construction, it is known that the bridge was the greatest arched construction in the world and one of the biggest architectural ventures of the time.

The arch is 28.7 meters high. Two towers were built for the bridge keepers, Halebija and Tara, and during the Ottoman rule they served as weapon storage.

Reconstruction of the Old Bridge took seven years to complete and it cost 13.5 million USD. Funds were collected thanks to a credit from the World Bank and donations from Turkey, Italy, the Netherlands and Croatia.

Reconstruction was completed in June 2004 and the opening ceremony was held on June 23, 2004. The Old Bridge and the old town of Mostar were put on UNESCO’s world heritage list in 2005, thus becoming the first cultural heritage monument on UNESCO’s list from BiH.
