The campaign “MAKE UP FOR EQUALITY” started today in Sarajevo with the goal of naming as many streets, squares and parks as possible after women.

The organizers of the campaign and that initiative, the HEART agency, which is the only one in Croatia that deals exclusively with socially responsible projects, and the Woman.Comm Club, the leading regional club of women from the communications industry, gathered in front of the Youth Theater in Sarajevo, where they said they wanted to raise awareness of the issue of gender inequality in street names.

Thus, it was emphasized that less than two percent of the streets in Bosnia and Herzegovina are named after women. These are worrying statistics, according to which Sarajevo has 1.63 percent, Tuzla 2.21 percent, and Zenica only 1.36 percent of streets named after women. Tešanj, Bugojno and Gračanica do not have a single such street.

“That’s why the website http://www.velikanke.ba is operational from today, where interested citizens can sign a petition to rename a square in Sarajevo after BiH giants or those who will become one. I am glad that this campaign is being implemented not only in Croatia but also in BiH,” said the project manager of the HEART agency Ivana Geber.

As the director of the Woman.Comm Club, Irena Miličević Vukoja, pointed out, the aforementioned initiative will make society better for everyone.

“Today will leave a mark in Bosnia and Herzegovina. history and I hope that we will stand up for equality for our children and future great women. Through this project, we also want to provide education about who were BiH great men and great women due to the specificity of BiH. I believe that BiH great women made a breakthrough through sports, their hobbies, education, media, social networks and other areas. We encourage that tomorrow each of our girls can be the future Lana Pudar,” said Milicevic Vukoja.

Citizens present at the event pointed out that not enough attention is paid to women from the history of Bosnia and Herzegovina, including those who are important today. That is why, as they say, they will already sign the petition on the velikanke.ba website today.

This project will be implemented with the support of the OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina, the CURE Foundation, the Fortenova Group with the intention of equalizing the ratio of male and female names in the process of naming streets, squares and parks in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Fena reports.
