The Association of War Victims “Foča 92-95” commented after the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina ruled to lift the house arrest of Dragoljub Kunarac, accused of crimes in Foča.
“The shameful and deeply offensive decision of the Court of BiH to allow Dragoljub Kunarac (Žaga) to defend himself from freedom is a slap in the face to all victims of war crimes during the aggression on Bosnia and Herzegovina. This is a message that the pain, suffering and trauma of the victims are not important enough,” the Association stated.
They also asked “how they can feel safe when those responsible for the most serious crimes are released.”
“Such decisions not only cause fear and insecurity, but also destroy what little trust is left in judicial institutions. We demand accountability. We demand justice. We demand that the voice of the victims is finally heard and respected. Because without justice there is no security or future,” they concluded.
As a reminder, the Court of BiH ruled two days ago to lift Kunarac’s house arrest. The Court explained that the accused for the crimes in Foča is still prohibited from traveling, meeting with certain persons, and is required to report to the competent police station three times a week.
Kunarac was transferred to Bosnia and Herzegovina in February this year from Germany, where he was serving a 28-year prison sentence, to which he was sentenced by the Hague Tribunal for multiple rapes and for enslaving two women, whom he completely deprived of control over their lives and treated as his property.
He is currently on trial for the crimes committed in Foča.
