The Icelandic Meteorological Institute has published a new report on its website, which shows the situation in Grindavik. It states, among other things, that the dikes managed to direct the flow of lava from the larger fissure to the west.
Two fissures are still erupting north of Grindavík, the larger one at Hagafell and the smaller one at the very edge of the town. Lava flows from both fissures.
A smaller fissure, about 100 meters long, which opened around 12 noon today, is spewing lava within the city limits and causing considerable damage.
The northern and larger fissure is about 900 meters long and from it the lava flows mainly towards the west. It is mostly north of the dikes that have been built recently.
The amount of magma flowing from the fissures will be better assessed tomorrow, it said.
