The spokesman of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) James Elder said that the largest case of displacement of children in the world was recorded in Sudan, where four million children have been displaced in a country where conflicts are taking place.
At a press conference at the United Nations (UN) Office in Geneva, Elder pointed out that the situation has worsened since April 2023, when the conflicts in Sudan began.
“The largest case of displacement of children in the world happened in Sudan. Four million children were displaced. This means that 13,000 children are displaced every day,” said Elder.
He underlined that due to the conflict in Sudan there is no security and that more than 700,000 children are facing the most dangerous situation of malnutrition.
Stressing that two-thirds of the population in Sudan do not have access to basic health services, Elder added:
“Then this is a war that destroys health and food systems. This is a war that destroys the concept of respecting the laws of war and kills people.”
Since April 2023, Sudan has been wracked by fighting between the army, led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, head of the country’s ruling Sovereign Council, and the paramilitary Rapid Support Force.
Several Saudi- and US-brokered ceasefire agreements have failed to end the violence.
The World Food Program (WFP) has announced that it has received reports of deaths from starvation in parts of Sudan where the civil war is ongoing.
Namely, the WFP statement said that the number of people in need of food aid in that country had doubled last year and called on all parties to allow the delivery of humanitarian aid.
It added that it is almost impossible for humanitarian agencies to reach those in need of food due to security threats and road closures.
The statement said that 18 million people across the country are facing the threat of severe hunger.
It was further stated that 70 trucks are stopped in Port Sudan and 31 trucks in Al-Ubeyd and cannot move due to security issues.
WFP Sudan representative Eddie Rowe said that life-saving aid is not reaching those who need it most and they are starting to receive news of deaths due to starvation.
