The Symbol of Luxury from the former State has gone into History

The symbol of luxury from the former Yugoslavia and one of the most famous buildings in our region, the hotel “Jugoslavija,” has been completely demolished, and preparations have begun for the construction of a new complex on this site.

Only the foundations remain where the hotel once stood, while excavators are daily removing construction debris and preparing the ground for the construction of a new luxury facility.

Hotel Jugoslavija was sold at auction on March 22nd, 2024, at a starting price of 27 million euros, and the company Millenium Team, which is behind the new investment, announced that the new hotel complex will be worth between 400 and 500 million euros.

The demolition of this hotel began in November 2024, and according to earlier information, the new hotel complex is planned to be completed by the end of 2027.

“The project will transform the space of the old hotel into a prestigious destination. The complex will include a luxury hotel with 200 rooms and two towers – a residential tower of 42 floors and a business tower of 34 floors, neither of which will exceed a height of 150 meters,” it was announced.

The demolition of Hotel Jugoslavija also sparked strong reactions from citizens and associations that opposed it due to potential threats to the overall environment.

Additionally, the Eko Straza Association raised concerns about the demolition process, stating that the biggest issue is asbestos dust.

“What is currently happening is a completely reckless, unprofessional, and criminal demolition of Hotel Jugoslavija. Besides the problem of destroying the city’s historical heritage and dealing with 30.000 tons of rubble, a much bigger issue, dangerous to the general population, is the problem of asbestos dust. Asbestos dust consists of tiny, microscopic particles that are released when materials containing asbestos are broken, cut, or damaged. Asbestos has a fibrous structure, and while it is in solid form, it is not as dangerous. However, when asbestos fibers are released into the air as fine dust, they become extremely hazardous to health,” they stated at the time, Klix.ba writes.
