The US Embassy in BiH: Tone of the Cavara’s Letter addressed to Christian Schmidt is arrogant

The United States Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina reacted to the statements of the Federation kf BiH President Marinko Cavara and emphasized that his failure to appoint judges to the Constitutional Court of FBiH was irresponsible.

As emphasized, Cavara’s omission is not only personally irresponsible, but also shows a wider problem.

“It shows that the political leaders of this country have deviated from their duty towards the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Cavara pointed to the lack of political consensus as the reason for not fulfilling their constitutional duties, but what steps did he and his colleagues take in terms of solving the issue of lack of consensus during the eight years that are in power? What compromises did they achieve in order to build understanding and ease tensions?”, stated the Embassy.

It was also emphasized that the tone of the letter addressed to Christian Schmidt is arrogant.

“While we welcome today’s commitment of President Cavara to the performance of his duties and the appointment of four judges of the Constitutional Court of FBiH, we are of the opinion that the tone of the letter he sent to the high representative is arrogant and that his interpretation of the facts is extremely one-sided. The letter completely ignores the behavior of HDZ BiH, which to a large extent contributed to the sabotage of FBiH institutions for the sake of fulfilling its narrow interests, and misused the control mechanisms contained in the FBiH Constitution,” they said.

Finally, it was emphasized that BiH needs functional institutions at the state and entity level.

“Without stability, positive changes and reforms are impossible. This requires preserving the balance between the two entities in BiH, as well as between its three constituent nations and the Others. Instead, political leaders use these institutions to undermine that balance, or for their complete collapse. Unfortunately , political leaders continue to refuse to resolve long-standing institutional issues in BiH. The current, toxic political culture is dangerous and unless this changes, BiH will not be stable enough for its citizens to enjoy the peace and prosperity they deserve,” the Embassy concluded.
