At last night’s session of the UN Security Council, the United States strongly supported the decision of the High Representative Christian Schmidt to impose changes to the Election Law on election night on October 2, at the same time emphasizing that they also support his report presented to the UNSC.
The representative of the United States welcomed the unanimous UN Security Council vote to extend the mandate of EU military operation in Bosnia and Herzegovina for another year and said the US fully supports the Office of the High Representative of the international community until the country meets the criteria to graduate from international supervision.
The US welcomed the report on the situation in BiH which the High Representative of the international community in BiH, Christian Schmidt, submitted to the UN Security Council on Wednesday, saying these reports are “vital to keeping the international community informed about the ongoing efforts to ensure enduring stability and security in the region.”
“The Bonn powers are a key tool for maintaining stability in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region. The imposition of October 2 was necessary to prevent the collapse of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The High Representative has a key role,” the US representative said, adding that Washington firmly supports the territorial sovereignty and integrity of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The French representative in the Security Council assessed the continuation of political blockades as unacceptable, including those that prevent the establishment of government in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina after the elections. At the session, France, the USA, and Great Britain clearly condemned all calls for the secession of the entity of Republika Srpska from Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as the glorification of war criminals.
On the other hand, the Russian representative said in her speech that the Security Council should not consider Schmidt’s report at all, but that it is the report submitted by Republika Srpska that, as she says, “talks about the real problems in Bosnia and Herzegovina.”
“Authorities that the West does not like are to be pushed aside. We warn that such a short-sighted policy has serious consequences and call for an end to experiments in an independent state. Let’s give this country a chance to develop independently,” said the representative of Russia in the UNSC.
