Cardio surgeries are successfully conducted in the Clinical University Center Sarajevo (CUCS) for 20 years. During the last five months, a total of seven interventions were performed on children at the Clinic for Cardiovascular Surgery on the CUCS.
These are different heart defects, and one of the last surgeries was performed on a little baby, who was just 3 months old and weighing 4 kilograms.
The team that performed the surgery on a three-months old baby included anaesthesiologist, paediatrician and cardio surgeons, as well as nurses and technicians.
“We have all the necessary equipment and a professional team that is ready to work in accordance with the existing requirements at any moment in time,” said Dr. Djonlic.
“I was part of the team that started with the development of cardiovascular surgery in BiH. I performed surgeries both on adults and children all these years. I had the honour to learn from a renowned expert, Prof. Dr. Gregor Volonek from AKH Vienna, and I took my exam before him, which consisted of a surgery performed on an adult and a surgery performed on a child. All of our cardio surgeons performed surgeries on children, and we are completely trained for that field of medicine. We have a team of serious cardio-surgeons who would not engage in interventions if they are not sure that they will be able to successfully complete them,” said. Dr. Vila.
The Head of Cardiology Department of Pediatric Clinic, Prim. Mr. sci. Dr. Zijo Begic, noted that the continuity of their work has been successfully maintained for more than 20 years. He added that they performed seven surgeries this year.
