TimeOut magazine has published a list of the 10 cheapest cities in Europe, with Sarajevo ranked sixth. Surprisingly, Zagreb ranked higher, in third place.
Noting that things are getting more expensive in Europe and that many of the reliably “cheap” cities are no longer so affordable, TimeOut decided to compile a list of destinations where tourists won’t have to spend too much money.
“Popular destinations in Greece, Spain, Italy, and other countries are affected by overtourism, and prices are starting to look the same everywhere. But don’t worry: even if budgets are tight this year, there are still plenty of places that won’t drain your wallet. The best part? These are places with fewer tourists and less crowding, and flights there are likely to be much cheaper,” TimeOut states.
Tirana in Albania took the first place, Sofia in Bulgaria came second, while Zagreb was third. Surprisingly, Zagreb is considered more expensive than Sarajevo, yet it was ranked higher than the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) on this list.
Sarajevo landed in sixth place, and TimeOut writes: “Another Balkan spot on the list, Sarajevo is the capital of BiH, and prices remain extremely affordable. It’s also a city that doesn’t require spending money – you can wander its streets for hours.”
“Join a free walking tour to get to know and learn more about the city’s history (we say free, but do make sure to tip your tour guide). Grab lunch at the city market Markale, the covered market in the city center, fill up on traditional burek for less than five dollars, and stop by for a beer or wine for only two dollars,” the article continues.
The full list of the 10 cheapest cities in Europe according to TimeOut magazine includes: Tirana, Albania; Sofia, Bulgaria; Zagreb, Croatia; Kaunas, Lithuania; Riga, Latvia; Sarajevo, BiH; Krakow, Poland; Bucharest, Romania; Hull, United Kingdom; CeskyKrumlov, Czech Republic.
