Tragedy in Sudan: 70 Killed in Hospital Attack Amid Escalating Violence

About 70 people have been killed in an attack on the only hospital in the besieged town of El-Fasher in Sudan, World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on X today.

Officials in the capital of North Darfur province gave a similar figure, but Ghebreyesus is the first foreign source to release a death toll.

“A horrific attack on a Saudi hospital in El-Fasher, Sudan, 19 injured and 70 deaths among patients and attendants,” he wrote.

He added that the hospital was packed with patients at the time of the attack, but did not say who the attackers were, although local officials blamed the rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The RSF has not commented, but has threatened the town of El-Fasher in recent days.

Sudan has been embroiled in a civil war between government forces and RSF rebels for more than a year, leaving scores of people dead and internally displaced.
