US President Donald Trump announced that the United States and Iran have reached an agreement on a two-week ceasefire.
According to a post on the social network Truth Social, the ceasefire was brokered by Pakistan.
“Based on my conversations with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir of Pakistan, who requested that I postpone the destructive force that was directed towards Iran tonight, and provided that the Islamic Republic of Iran agrees to the full, immediate and safe opening of the Strait of Hormuz, I am agreeing to suspend the bombing and attack on Iran for a period of two weeks. This will be a mutual ceasefire!” Trump announced.
He went on to explain his reasons for agreeing to the ceasefire, reiterating his claims that “all military objectives have been met.”
“We have received a 10-point proposal from Iran and we believe it is a workable basis for negotiations. Almost all of the points of previous disagreement have already been agreed upon between the United States and Iran, but the two-week period will allow the agreement to be finalized and concluded,” Trump said.
This has put an end, at least for the next two weeks, to the conflict between Iran on the one hand and the United States and Israel on the other, which began with the US-Israeli attacks launched on February 28.
The ceasefire came in the final moments before the deadline set by Trump for the opening of the strait. In the event that an agreement was not reached, the US president announced that he would intensify the attacks, even to the point of “wiping out civilization.”
US President Donald Trump’s spokeswoman, Caroline Leavitt, has released the first official reaction from his cabinet regarding the agreement on a two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran.
As expected, Leavitt declared the agreement a victory for the United States in her announcement.
“This is a victory for the United States of America, achieved by President Trump and our incredible military. From the very beginning of Operation Epic Fury, President Trump estimated that this would be an operation lasting 4 to 6 weeks. Thanks to the incredible capabilities of our soldiers, we have achieved and exceeded our key military objectives in 38 days,” Leavitt wrote.
She added that US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth will provide more information on the military aspect at a separate press conference, scheduled for later today.
“Our military’s success created maximum leverage, allowing President Trump and his team to conduct difficult negotiations that have now opened the way for a diplomatic solution and long-term peace. President Trump also reopened the Strait of Hormuz. Never underestimate President Trump’s ability to successfully advance America’s interests and broker peace,” Trump’s spokeswoman added.
