US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose additional tariffs of 50 percent on China unless Beijing drops its 34 percent retaliatory tariffs on US imports.

In a post on his social media account, Trump gave Beijing until Tuesday to withdraw the retaliatory tariffs or face additional costs starting Wednesday.

The White House has meanwhile denied speculation that the huge US tariff package could be suspended, the DPA news agency reported.

Speculation about a pause has caused a stir on social media and led to significant market fluctuations.
