Russia sees Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s readiness for negotiations in a “positive” light, the Kremlin said.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Russia evaluated Zelensky’s recent statements “positively”, but that it was not yet clear with whom Moscow would negotiate.
“The question is who to sit down with. For now, the legal ban on the Ukrainian president on conducting negotiations with the Russian side remains in force,” Peskov said, referring to Zelensky’s 2022 decree banning negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
He asserted that “the overall approach is positive, but the nuances have not yet changed.”
US President Donald Trump said in his first address to Congress that he had received a letter from Zelensky expressing Kiev’s willingness to sit down at the negotiating table in search of “lasting peace”.
Later, Ukrainian Ambassador to the United States Oksana Markarova wrote on Facebook that Trump had read Zelensky’s earlier message on X, in which he expressed regret over the public discussion at a White House meeting last week, saying it had not gone as planned.
A heated exchange between Zelensky, Trump, and Vice President J.D. Vance took place in the Oval Office on February 28. While Zelensky expressed doubts that diplomacy could lead to peace, Trump and Vance criticized the Ukrainian leader for being “not grateful for the support of the United States.”, AA writes.
