Turkey has not yet determined Mahmuljin’s Location

Almost a year after the warrant was issued for the former commander of the Third Corps of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) Army, Sakib Mahmuljin, who was convicted of crimes against Serbian civilians and soldiers in Vozuca and Zavidovici, Turkey still has not determined his location, even though the Court of BiH has sent a request for his extradition.

The BiH Ministry of Justice said that in September they were informed through diplomatic channels by Turkish judicial authorities that the location of Mahmuljin “has not yet been determined”.

The Court of BiH reminds that Mahmuljin did not start serving his prison sentence on December 6th, 2022, and according to the latest information they have, he is in Turkey for treatment.

“He submitted the medical documentation of the clinic from Turkey, and the Court has no information as to whether the convicted person has finished treatment. According to the latest information that the Court of BiH received from Turkey, the convicted Sakib Mahmuljin is not yet located in Turkey,” stated the Court of BiH, which in November of last year issued an order to issue an international warrant for Mahmuljin.

After he did not report to serve his sentence, the Court of BiHsent a request to Turkey for his extradition.

At the end of April 2022, the Appellate Division of the Court of BiH sentenced Mahmuljin to a single sentence of eight years in prison for crimes committed in 1995 in Vozuca and Zavidovici.

Mahmuljin was sentenced to one year for war crimes against the civilian population, one year and six months for war crimes against the wounded and sick, six years and six months for war crimes against prisoners of war, and he was sentenced to a single sentence of eight years in prison.

This verdict was pronounced after a renewed trial when the defense’s appeal against the first-instance verdict was accepted, which sentenced Mahmuljin to ten years in prison for failing to prevent and punish the crimes committed by members of the “El Mujahideen” detachment, a unit from the Third Corps, to whom he was direct superior.
