Two People died in the Floods in Germany

The death toll from heavy flooding in southern Germany has risen to two after the body of a woman was found in Bavaria yesterday.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz visited the affected areas in the federal states of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg yesterday, and officials warn that the water level could rise further in some areas after heavy rains. The floods have caused major traffic disruptions, and train routes to Munich from the north and west are no longer in operation from yesterday.

Scholz visited Reichertshofen, located north of Munich, and inspected the river bank secured by sandbags and met with the governor of Bavaria, Markus Seder.

Seder said that the situation “is still critical and tense”, with the water receding in some places, but in other places there are risks of new floods and evacuations. He noted that the water level is expected to rise in the city of Regensburg and further down the Danube.

Scholz said that “this is not just a one-off event that has happened before” and that the recent spate of floods shows that “we cannot ignore the task of stopping man-made climate change”.
