The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management has allocated seven hectares of land into concession to the Trebinje Cooperative “Smokvica” in the village of Mesari near Trebinje, where two thousand figs seedlings should be planted.

This social cooperative was founded by the Women’s Center Trebinje, which brings together women that are victims of domestic violence.

In the first female cooperative in Trebinje, ten women will work on raising seven hectares of fig plantations. Preparations have already begun. For the planned melioration of the soil, it will be needed about 260 thousands BAM.
“This is a hope for all victims of domestic violence, that they can make something by themselves, to be useful and accepted, “ says Ljilja Cickovic, director of the Women’s Center.

Planting of trees is planned for the fall of next year, and the first products of dry figs and jam, which will have an organic certificate, will appear on the market in four years.
The plantation in the village of Mesari, with two thousand planted fig trees, is said to be the largest in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH).

Besides the activities in the newly established cooperative, the Trebinje Center is planning to begin construction of a safe house this year, where women that are victims of domestic violence will be located.
