The Embassy of the United States (U.S.) in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) issued a statement on the occasion of marking 30 years since the signing of the Dayton Peace Agreement.
A short message on the occasion of the anniversary was sent by the Charge d’Affaires of the U.S. Embassy, John Ginkel, emphasizing that the U.S. will continue to remain firmly committed to the stability of BiH.
“Today, we mark the thirtieth anniversary of the Dayton Peace Agreement. The framework established by this agreement has, for three decades, affirmed and protected the sovereignty and territorial integrity of BiH, and ensured peace for all its peoples. The U.S. remains firmly committed to providing support for the stability and security of BiH and the Western Balkans,” Ginkel said.
The Dayton Agreement ended the war that began in 1992 and significantly influenced the political and administrative structure of the state. BiH was formed as a complex state community composed of two constituent entities – the Federation of BiH (FBiH) and the Republika Srpska (RS) – in a ratio of 51 to 49 percent. Later, the Brcko District was formed as a special administrative unit.
Although Dayton ended the war and established the basic architecture of the state, its provisions have, for three decades, remained the subject of various political interpretations and one of the key factors of both stability and the peaceful functioning of BiH.
