U.S. Imposes Sanctions on Serbia’s Oil Industry Amid Rising Tensions

The United States Treasury Department (US) imposed sanctions on the Serbian Oil Industry today as part of a new package targeting entities owned by Russian companies.

The US Treasury Department announced on its official website that a number of companies in Russia and beyond are now under sanctions.

“The new decision on the energy sector targets Russia’s primary source of revenue with sanctions against Gazprom and Surgutneftegas, more than 180 vessels and dozens of oil traders, oilfield service providers, insurance companies and energy officials,” the statement said.

Among those sanctioned is NIS AD Novi Sad, which has been owned by Russia’s Gazprom since 2008.

In addition to NIS, Gazprom subsidiaries in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Luxembourg and Tajikistan have also been sanctioned.

All assets of these companies, as well as other Gazprom subsidiaries and partners in Russia, located in the United States have been seized, and the sanctions include a number of other consequences, which will be explained later.

The sanctions decisions are in line with the US policy of targeting the Russian economy following the illegal annexation of Crimea and the war against Ukraine.

With these comprehensive measures, Washington is fulfilling its G7 commitment to reduce Russian energy revenues, including blocking the largest Russian oil producers.
