The United States has submitted a draft resolution to the UN General Assembly calling for a “swift end” to the conflict in Ukraine, but making no mention of respect for the country’s territorial integrity, Agence France-Presse reported, citing diplomatic sources.

The draft resolution “calls for a rapid cessation of hostilities and calls for lasting peace between Ukraine and Russia.”

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called on UN member states to approve the “simple and historic” new resolution.

“The United States has submitted a simple and historic resolution to the UN, and we call on all member states to support it in order to chart a path to peace,” the US secretary of state said in a statement, which did not comment further on the content of the proposed text last night.

Russian Ambassador to the UN Vassily Nebenzia said the proposed US resolution was “a good idea.”

He also said the draft document made no reference to the “roots” of the conflict.

The UN General Assembly will meet on Monday to mark the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
