The United Nations Security Council has failed to adopt a draft resolution to permanently lift sanctions on Iran, but Tehran and key European powers still have eight days to try to agree on a postponement of punitive measures.
The 15-member UN Security Council had to vote on the draft resolution after Britain, France and Germany launched a 30-day process on August 28 to reimpose UN sanctions.
The countries accused Tehran of failing to comply with a 2015 deal with world powers aimed at preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons.
European powers are demanding that Iran allow UN inspectors to return to its nuclear sites.
China, Pakistan and Algeria voted in favor of the draft text. Nine members voted against, with two abstaining.
