Von Der Leyen Claims That The “Old” West No Longer Exists

President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen stated on Tuesday that the policies of the United States (U.S.) President Donald Trump are bringing “historic” changes, which are forcing the European Union (EU) to “play a very active role” in shaping a new world order.

“The West as we knew it no longer exists,” said von der Leyen in an interview. Although she has, as she says, always been a “convinced Atlanticist” and a “great friend of the U.S.,” the current crisis between the U.S. administration and Europe, combined with broader geopolitical challenges, requires decisive steps by the EU.

“What we have so far considered a world order is now turning into world disorder, caused, among other things, by the struggle for dominance between China and the U.S., but of course also by Putin’s imperial ambitions,” she stated.

“That is why we need a new, different EU, ready to step onto the global stage and actively participate in shaping the new world order that is coming,” said the European Commission president.

Von der Leyen emphasized that despite the aggressive trade policies of U.S. President Trump, the EU has retained its strength, and at the same time become more attractive to other countries due to its predictability and reliability.

“The positive effect of all this is that I am currently holding countless talks with heads of state and government around the world who want to cooperate with us on creating a new order,” she said, citing Canada, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, Mexico, and countries in South America as examples.

Von der Leyen stressed that although trade with the U.S. accounts for 13 percent of global trade, which is a significant share, the remaining 87 percent takes place with other countries.

“Everyone wants more trade with Europe, and it is not just a matter of economic relations. It is also about establishing common rules, as well as predictability. Europe is known for its predictability and reliability, which is now once again being perceived as a great value,” added von der Leyen.
