floods3Bosnia is bracing for new floods and possible mud slides as more heavy rainfall is forecast. Water levels in all Bosnia’s rivers have risen after several days of constant rain and in some places rivers have already started spilling their banks.

Mustafic Munevera, whose house was flooded three times last year: “We had flooding in May and the walls haven’t had time to dry and now we have it all again.”

In May last year, the heaviest rainfall in more than a century caused rivers in Bosnia, Serbia and Croatia to burst their banks, sweeping away roads, bridges and homes.

An international team assessing the damage caused by flooding last year said that the damage inflicted on Bosnia was in the region of USD 2.7 billion, or 18.5% of Bosnia’s gross domestic product.
